The Orange County Council High Adventure Team Spring Basic Backpacking Course
The new Basic Backpacking Course has being reshaped, reworked and redone…stream lined down from three weekends to two for the busy Scouter.
Part 1: Friday 3/7 (5:00 – 10:00 pm) & Saturday 3/8 (6:30 am – 7:00 pm) at the William J. Homes Center for Scouting. This portion of the course consists of didactic lectures, hands-on demonstrations and equipment round robins covering: backpacks, tents, sleeping systems, clothing, footwear, stoves and cook gear, backpack cooking and food, water treatment, map and compass, wilderness first aid, search and rescue, physical conditioning, critter encounters and food protection, Leave No Trace, wilderness survival, planning a backpack with Scouts including adult leadership, and trail building and conservation work opportunities.
Part 2: Sunday 3/8 (7;00 am – 2:00 pm): day hike with instructors
Part 3: TBA – overnight backpack experience.
