Spurgeon Award winners

Over 200 people observed as the prestigious Spurgeon Award was presented to Garden Grove Police Chief, Joe Polisa; Fullerton Fire Chief, Wolfgang Knabe, and Huntington Beach Mayor, Cathy Green. The luncheon was held on Friday, September 17 at the Irvine Outdoor Education Center in Orange. This year’s event raised over $30,000 to help support the Exploring Programs in Orange County.

Also presented at the luncheon were the Young American Awards. These awards were first presented in 1968, and are given to young adults between the ages of 15 and 22 who have achieved excellence in the fields of science, religion, government, business, humanities, art or literature, and have involved themselves in service to their community, country and to the quality of life. The Young American Award is a $500.00 unrestricted scholarship. This year’s recipients were:

Katie Cleveland, South County Safe Rides
Megan Cray, Seal Beach Police Post
Jesus Mora, Magnolia High JROTC Interact
Jose Ruelas, Orange Police Post
Michele Lau, Kaiser Hospital Post

Other awards presented included:

Cypress College presented a $250.00 scholarship to Louis Sandoval of Buena Pack Police Post.

Rotary International Governor, Johrita Solari, presented the Cliff Dochterman Award to two Rotarians active in Scouting or Exploring. Recipients of this award were First Past District Governor, Cliff Nelson, of the Orange Club and Eagle Scout and Second Incoming Anaheim Club President, Steve Sain.
