Orange County Boy Scouts Presents Leadership Award to Local Scout
Santa Ana, CA – The Orange County Council, Boy Scouts of America recognized Vanya Keyes of Huntington Beach, CA as the 2010 recipient of The Finley Sea Scout Service Award. Keyes was honored with her award at the Council’s Annual Recognition Dinner on March 30, 2011 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Garden Grove, CA.
Keyes is an 18-year-old Sea Scout with the rank of Able. Sea Scouting is a coed, outdoor program of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) for young adults ages 14-20. Keyes currently holds the title of National Sea Scout Boatswain, the top youth leader for the National Sea Scout program. Since joining the BSA at the age of 14, Keyes has participated in many regattas and served in various leadership positions in the BSA and in her high school. Keyes also represented The Orange County Council as one of the nine delegates of the BSA who delivered the organization’s annual Report to the Nation to Congress and had the privilege of meeting President Obama while in Washington, D.C.
The Finley Sea Scout Service Award recognizes those members and honorees of the United States Power Squadrons who are youth or adult Sea Scout leaders, and who have provided outstanding civic, educational, and fraternal leadership to both the Sea Scouts and the United States Power Squadrons, through civic involvement, educational achievement, and active participation in both programs.
Sea Scouting is a co-educational program offered to young adults, male and female, between the ages of 14-20 and their adult advisors. Sea Scouting is organized to promote better citizenship and to improve members’ boating skills and knowledge through instruction and practice in water safety, boating skills, outdoor, social, and service experiences, and knowledge of our maritime heritage.
The Orange County Council, is the largest youth-serving agency in the country serving almost 30,000 youth with educational programs that instill values, develop social and leadership skills, and promotes physical fitness and environmental awareness. The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Scout Law.
