Art for Our Youth Fundraiser Benefits OCBSA Learning for Life

Time is running out to reserve your space at a special fundraiser benefiting BSA’s Learning for Life. The event will take place on Saturday, May 24 from 6:00 – 11:00 p. m. at the Masterpiece Fine Art Showroom, 1945 Laguna Canyon Road in Laguna Beach, 92651.

Enjoy a collection of artwork by world renowned artists on display. Selected artworks will be available for purchase by silent and live auction. Proceeds will be donated to the educational program designed to meet the needs of youth and schools in the Orange County area.

Venturing and Sea Scouting Annual Recognition Banquet

Each year the Orange County Venturing and Sea Scouting Committees honor the youth who have earned or completed their Awards and Recognitions. These include the Bronze, Gold, Silver Awards, Ranger, Trust, Quest, the Apprentice, Able, Ordinary, and Quartermaster Awards. Also the VFW Scouts of the Year are recognized. The highlight of this event is the honoring of the 2008 Venturing Leadership Award recipients. And as a special added recognition, we will conduct the Venturing Powder Horn Course Ceremony.

Join the celebration on Saturday, June 7 at 6:00 pm at the LDS Church, 19191 17th Street, Huntington Beach 92648. Cost to attend is $25 and includes a Prime Rib dinner.

Sign Up for 2010 National Jamboree at Scout-O-Rama

The 2010 National Jamboree will be held in Fort A.P. Hill, Virginia and marks the 100 anniversary of Scouting in the US. The Orange County Council has set a goal of sending 10 troops to the Jamboree, and signups are now being accepted.

Over 40,000 Scouts and leaders are expected to attend. For Orange County Scouts, the trip will include a sightseeing tour of some of our national treasures such as Washington DC.

Stop by the 2010 Jamboree display at Scout-O-Rama (Saturday, May 17 from 9:00-4:00 at Irvine Valley College). The display will be located on Council Row. Learn more about the event, meet some of our Scoutmasters, and – most importantly - sign up for the Jamboree. A $300 deposit is required to reserve your spot.

The Jamboree will be the highlight of your Scouting career!


Employee Spotlight: Rebecca Ornelas

This week the Orange County Council is pleased to Spotlight Ms. Rebecca Ornelas. Rebecca served as a Scout volunteer for 8 years serving as a committee member for Pack 567 and Troop 412, Fountain Valley

Rebecca is currently the Learning for Life Director where she is responsible for the Council's Learning for Life Character Education School-Based Program. Under her leadership, she oversees over 14,000 Learning for Life participants within the Orange County Council. This program is designed to help children reach their full potential by defining strong character through value-based curriculum. The Learning for Life program takes place once a week and quarterly with parent groups.

Rebecca is currently a volunteer at her church, Holy Spirit. She is a volunteer teacher teaching CCD (Catechism) and enjoys working with kids. Rebecca is also a Eucharistic Minister.

Rebecca is a graduate of Cal State Long Beach with a Bachelor Degree in Social Work. She also attended El Camino Jr. College in Torrance and graduated with an Associate of Art Degree in Social Welfare. Rebecca was married for 16 years and has been a widow for the last 16 years. She has two wonderful children Sara and David. In her spare time, Rebecca enjoys reading romance book, science fiction, and fantasy. She is also a photographer and scraps booker and currently has a passion for making bead jewelry.


Youth Orange County Council Hosts the Western Region Powder Horn Course

Powder Horn is an advanced training opportunity designed to expose Venturing or Boy Scout Leaders to activities and outdoor skills resources necessary to operate a successful Venturing Ranger or Troop High Adventure Program. This course is available to all adults leaders over 21 who have completed their Leader Specific Training – Cubbing, Scouting, Varsity, Venturing, or Sea Scouting.

May 29-31 (Thu – Sat)
Oso Lake Scout Camp, Rancho Santa Margarita

June 5-7 (Thu – Sat)
Will J Reed Scout Park, Long Beach

The course participants will have the opportunity to experience real horsemanship provided by the Riding Team of WWR Ranch in Palos Verde. This will include safety, horse care, grooming, and even some stables cleaning for the lucky ones, and a trail ride in their rustic area. This along with our already planned Shooting and Climbing trips, SCUBA, as well as kayaking and sailing in Oso Lake, and so much more, will make this course a fantastic experience.

Course Fee is $250 and includes one ticket to the Orange County Council Annual Venturing and Sea Scouting Recognition Banquet June 7 (Sat night) where the Powder Horn Graduation Ceremony will be held.

Countdown to Scout-O-Rama 2008

With only eight days remaining until Scout-O-Rama 2008, final preparations are underway to make this year a year to remember. Scout-O-Rama is, scheduled to take place on Saturday, May 17, at Irvine Valley College. There are over 26 corporate booths, 178 Scout and Council booths and 60 Service Units confirmed for a day of fun in the sun.

"Fun in the Sun" at Cub Scout Day Camp

Cub Scout Day Camp is a five-day experience that offers opportunities for all levels of Cub Scouting, from Tiger to Webelos II, to participate in activities that are designed to build mental fitness, physical skills, and character, and is held in each District.

 Each camp has a variety of age-appropriate games and sports, crafts, and other activities that will assist your Cub as they have “Fun In The Sun.” Belt loops, activity pins, and other advancements are earned at each camp. Contact the camp director to find out what your Cub will be earning at Cub Scout Day Camp this year.

The cost for a week of fun is just $120 per Cub Scout! BUT if you make your Den or Pack reservation by Scout-O-Rama (May 17, 2008), you will receive a $10 discount. Council Safety Training Day Scheduled in June

The following trainings will be hosted by the Orange County Council on Saturday, June 14, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. :

Trainings include:

Safe Swim Defense - Safety Afloat  -  Trek Safely
Climb On Safely - CPR/First Aid ($$-additional cost)
Health and Safety Training

Leadership and Team Building at the 2008 Trailblazers / NYLT

The Orange County Council 2008 Trailblazers / National Youth Leader Training (NYLT) course will take place from Saturday, June 21 to Thursday, June 26 at Schoepe Scout Reservation Lost Valley.

Leadership and team building skills are an important part of the course. Throughout the week, Scout youth leaders from Orange County Council will be living, camping and learning together as members of a Patrol and Troop. Experienced youth and adult staff will assist in the training process.

A mandatory Downhill meeting is scheduled for Saturday, June 7 at the OCBSA Council Offices *1211 East Dyer Rd. in Santa Ana) from 9:00 – 11:30 am for both Scouts and their parents. Scouts are required to wear their full Class A Field Uniform with position and rank insignia removed\. Scout shorts are the official pants of the course; Scout pants may only be worn with special permission from the Course Director. Each Scout is required to have a wooden stave (hiking stick) in their possession and camping gear must be secured in a backpack ready for inspection. Some supplies will be available for purchase on the day of the meeting.

Limited Quantity of Eagle Recogntion Patches Still Available
The 2008 Eagle Dinner was a great success boasting over 350 participants who came in support of the Class of 2007 Eagle Scouts, Quartermasters, and Silver Venturing Award Recipients. All Scouts and sponsors who attended were honored with a commemorative 2007 Eagle Recognition patch for their involvement in the dinner.

A limited supply of extra patches from the dinner are still available. Patches are being sold at $5 each and all proceeds will benefit the Eagle Dinner. Please call Ami Lieberman at 714-546-4990 x144 or email AmiL@ocbsa.org to reserve yours today!

All patches must be picked up at the Scout office.
