Youth Protection Training

Youth Protection Training

The Youth Protection Team will continue to provide the program on a monthly basis at the five LDS Centers, (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) in Orange County by Council approved trainers.  Anytime you suspect child abuse in scouting you are required to report to appropriate authorities.  Click here for reporting guidelines.  Each registered adult is required to take Youth Protection Training every 3 years.  No R.S.V.P needed, just show up.  Click here for onsite schedule and locations.  You can also take the Youth Protection Training Course Online.  If this is your first Youth Protection Training, we recommend that you attend the live training first before taking the course online.

This one and one-half hour course is required to cover the youth protection policies of the Boy Scouts of America.  For certain outings this training is required.  A certificate will be issue upon completion of training and it is good for three years.  The Video starts at 7:30 P.M. so plan to arrive by 7:15 P.M. to register (sign-in); once the presentation begins, no one will be admitted.  You must stay for the entire presentation to become certified and receive your signed and dated Youth Protection card.

There is no charge for this training.  You may purchase a Youth Protection patch for $2.50 at the training or the Council Service Center or South County Scout Shop in Laguna Hills.

Although this is not the ideal way to see the Youth Protection Video, we do try to provide the service to get everyone certified.  On all Tour Permits, one person on each outing must be trained and certified in Youth Protection.

Remember: The video, "A Time to Tell" is available to show to Boy Scouts and "It Happened to Me" is available to show to Cub Scouts with a parent present.  Both videos are available for purchase at $5.00 each at the Scout Service Center.

In 1995 the Quality Unit Award stated that every unit must have a coordinator for Youth Protection.  Beginning in 1996, each unit coordinator is responsible for:

  1. Making sure the adults are Youth Protection trained and

  2. That the unit shows the youth video to its members at least once a year.  (prior to attending summer camp)
