Membership is important. Membership means registration with the Boy Scouts of America. This entails the submission of an application by a young person (with parent or guardian approval) to a unit leader, payment of a membership fee, acceptance by the unit and local council, and issuance of an official registration card. Scouting has purposes:
- To influence the development of character and encourage spiritual growth
- To develop habits and attitudes of good citizenship
- To encourage good sportsmanship and pride in growing strong in mind and body
- To improve understanding within the family
- To strengthen the ability to get along with other boys and respect other people
- To foster a sense of personal achievement by developing new interests and skills
- To show how to be helpful and do one's best
- To provide fun and exciting new things to do
- To prepare boys to become Boy Scouts
