Congratulations Ship 711—Golden Windjammer Three-peat!

“The Golden Windjammer trophy is awarded to the ship that earns the highest overall Windjammer score—highest percentage in ship events and the most number of satisfactory scores in team events—for the Rendezvous event. For those that strive to be the very best, go for the gold!”

From the Newport Sea Base, Delmar Ship 711 has been keeping up a winning 42 year old tradition.David George of Del Mar, eyes shielded from all angles except down, sets course through the parking lot for Navigation event. Several groups of exceptional Sea Scouts have been led by Mike Stewart for the past 41 of those years. The Ship, now teaming with 10 members age 14-21, gives rock star performances wherever they go. Steve Ignacio, David George, Jonathon Harada, Corey Kemp, Chris McKay, Dave Paquin, Nick Peterson, Matt Schneider, Dale Stoica and Dan Stoica are today’s Ship 711.

Steve Ignacio, recently retired bosun, shares his thoughts, “Sea Scouting is a great boating program for young teens, both boys and girls, fourteen years old to twenty-one who would like to increase their seamanship knowledge as well as to become an experienced boater. With Sea Scouting you meet many people, some people are quite famous and some are not, but that is not the only cool thing involved with Sea Scouting. There are competitions, dances, various seamanship courses and much more. You could get lucky and become a member of the defending Golden Windjammer Award, [like] the Delmar…. Besides all this, there is a great dance put on and free time to socialize with other Sea Scouts. If you join Sea Scouting you will never regret it because it opens you up to the wonderful world of boating.”

Of the many competitions  Ship 711 has participated in, last November  for the third year in a row, the Del Mar took home the Golden Windjammer award from the Port Hueneme, Navy Base for giving the most overall outstanding performance.  Of the 23 total events, the Del Mar captured the following:

Second Place

Special Award
in Endurance and Scuttle Off.

21st Annual Long Beach Invitational Regatta, Saturday March 20, 2004, Del Mar brought home the 1st place trophy, for the fourth consecutive year! First place ranking judged on best performance in: Navigation, Mariner’s Jeopardy, Compass Points, Night Cruise, Rowing and “Walk the Plank”.

Wish them luck as they prepare to compete in the Ancient Mariner Regatta, Friday May 28 through Sunday May 30 at the Stockton Sea Base!

Del Mars' David George and Dave Paquin in competitionIn addition to competitions, the Ship meets every Wednesday night.  Can you eat two tablespoons of cinnamon? 6 salty crackers in less than one minute? How about a 6’ submarine sandwich by yourself? The opening conversation to the last December Del Mar meeting before Christmas Break. Del Mar has taken home the Golden Windjammer award and tonight they celebrate with popping bottles of sparkling apple cider and 4 or 5 boxes of pizza. After reading through the list of awards Del Mar has won, I thought they might be a little smug. Instead, they were pretty modest  about the whole experience. I know they were proud, they certainly led on to that, but they continued through the celebration eating pizza.  As for the cinnamon and salty cracker competition, I’ll keep you posted.
