Opening Day at the Newport Sea Base: Free Event for the Entire Family

The U.S Coast Guard will participate in Opening Day activities at the Newport Sea Base on Saturday, April 19.. Activities include lawn games, sail boat rides, inspections of Sea Scout ships, free tours of the Coast Guard Cutter, “The Narwhal,” and will run from 11:30am to 2:00pm.

The Newport Sea Base serves the youth by providing quality educational programs that instill solid values, teach effective teamwork, provide nautical safety skills and provide a venue for all to enjoy the wonders of the waterfront. Programming is open to girls and boys ages 6 to 18.

The Newport Sea Base is located at 1931 W. Coast Highway in Newport Beach. Parking and shuttle service will be available at Newport Harbor High School located on 16th Street. For more information contact the Newport Sea Base at 949-642-5031.


The Scout Shop Has Openings!

Qualified candidates are encouraged to apply for a full-time position at the Santa Ana Scout Shop.

The position requirements are presenting, selling and stocking Scout Shop merchandise; excellent cash handling skills and the ability to make change are mandatory; helping to unload trucks and stocking the merchandise after checking it in; a working knowledge of Microsoft Office; retail sale experience; and good people skills are essential.

The starting salary for the full-time position is $25,700. The basic benefits are sick days, personal days and paid vacation. Health care plan is provided with, optional dental and optical. The stores are closed for six major holidays and employees get an additional six days off after agreement between the employee and Store Manager.

The part-time position starts at $8.00 per hour and offers approximately 15 to 20 hours per week there are occasional weeks of more hours when full-time staff is on vacation, and at inventory time. The critical need is Monday and Wednesday.

Council Safety Trainining Day Scheduled for June 14

The following trainings will be hosted by the Orange County Council on Saturday, June 14, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. :

Trainings include:

Safe Swim Defense - Safety Afloat  -  Trek Safely
Climb On Safely - CPR/First Aid ($$-additional cost)
Health and Safety Training

Leadership and Team Building at the 2008 Trailblazers / NYLT

 The Orange County Council 2008 Trailblazers / National Youth Leader Training (NYLT) course will take place from Saturday, June 21 to Thursday, June 26 at Schoepe Scout Reservation Lost Valley.

Leadership and team building skills are an important part of the course. Throughout the week, Scout youth leaders from Orange County Council will be living, camping and learning together as members of a Patrol and Troop. Experienced youth and adult staff will assist in the training process.

A mandatory Downhill meeting is scheduled for Saturday, June 7 at the OCBSA Council Offices *1211 East Dyer Rd. in Santa Ana) from 9:00 – 11:30 am for both Scouts and their parents. Scouts are required to wear their full Class A Field Uniform with position and rank insignia removed\. Scout shorts are the official pants of the course; Scout pants may only be worn with special permission from the Course Director. Each Scout is required to have a wooden stave (hiking stick) in their possession and camping gear must be secured in a backpack ready for inspection. Some supplies will be available for purchase on the day of the meeting.

"Fun in the Sun" at Cub Scout Day Camp

Cub Scout Day Camp is a five-day experience that offers opportunities for all levels of Cub Scouting, from Tiger to Webelos II, to participate in activities that are designed to build mental fitness, physical skills, and character, and is held in each District.

 Each camp has a variety of age-appropriate games and sports, crafts, and other activities that will assist your Cub as they have “Fun In The Sun.” Belt loops, activity pins, and other advancements are earned at each camp. Contact the camp director to find out what your Cub will be earning at Cub Scout Day Camp this year.

The cost for a week of fun is just $120 per Cub Scout! BUT if you make your Den or Pack reservation by Scout-O-Rama (May 17, 2008), you will receive a $10 discount. Adult Volunteers Sought for National Philmont Mountain Trek

Attention Crew Advisors and District/Council volunteers: Do you have any youth members in your crew or family who would like to take a mountain trek at Philmont this summer and earn their Kodiak Award at the same time?

For the first time ever, adult volunteers who attend one of the conferences during Venturing week will be able to bring one or two youth along for this fabulous opportunity. There are a very limited number of spots available, so make your plans quickly.

Register for a conference and indicate your interest, and the Philmont Training Center will call you with the details for the Kodiak Mountain Treks August 3–9, 2008.
