Memorial Day Family Day Camp
If you’ve never been to a Family Camp we have a great time, all the program areas are open and available. We have our Rapid Transit System 'Big Tex' that does a loop around camp so you can be picked up at any of the ‘Bus Stops’ to be taken around camp. For the younger crew there will be a Raingutter Regatta. This year we are offering meal service for the first 200 people who sign up (at an additional cost). You can also bring bikes (with helmets) to camp; it's a great place for the kids to be able to just take off on their bicycles.
On Saturday evening we’re going to have a Chili Cook-off, so gather the fixin’s and heat up the Dutch ovens. We will also have a Saturday Night Movie & Western Dance (Bring your Western Wear!). On Sunday we have a Scouts Own in the morning and a campfire in the evening. We also open up the observatory at night so people can come
by and see the moon, Saturn, and Jupiter.

All We Can Say Is WOW!
At the beginning of April, our website development team gave us our ‘occupancy permit’ for the website: in other words, the majority of the work has been completed, and have they been busy lately! There are many new features, like a slideshow on the front page, new pages, new forms, new downloads, and the on-line Merit Badge signups. You’ll just have to visit the website at www.ssrlv.org to see the new and improved features.
Radio Merit Badge
Have you ever wanted to be a Disc Jockey, to be heard all over town?
You could tell everyone what an awesome Troop you have, and what you have done this year. Take requests from the guys in the Troop. Say “Hi”, to that special lady back home (we mean Mom!). You can do this as part of the Radio Merit Badge course. As the elective requirement you’ll be putting together a radio show to be broadcasted over L.V.S.R., our micro powered radio station that is also streamed on the internet. We’ll also rebroadcast the radio shows during the upcoming year! The Radio Merit Badge is one of the evening courses taught at Lost Valley this year. Sign-up on-line today!
Program Area Focus: Scout Skills
It is shown that one of the best ways to retain a Scout is to have him advance to the rank of First Class by his first year in Scouting. At the Scout Skills area, you’ll find staff dedicated to make rank advancement the best experience possible.
This year, we are trying something different, suggested by the Scoutmasters in our surveys. A double session will be dedicated to a structured program that will take a new Scout and get him 80% of the way to the First Class rank.
Depending on the side of camp you’re on, it will be a morning or afternoon session, but the Scout can sign up for either side of camp. It is our policy not to mark off the requirement in the Scouts handbook, so we will give each Scout a passport that will have the requirements that the Scout participated in, signing the requirement off is left up to the Scoutmaster. If a Scout is only working on certain requirement, they can come by when the class is not being taught and work on individual requirements.
We hope this will meet the needs of those Scouts who have just bridged over, or the Scout trying to knock out a couple of requirements for his next rank advancement.

Volunteering During Summer Camp
This is a subject close to my old heart: Volunteer Commissioners at Summer Camp. For years I had been coming up for summer camp with my Troop, but when my sons were on staff, that’s when I found out about Volunteer Commissioning.
Basically, you’re a goodwill ambassador at Scout Camp, helping out Scouters and Scouts, at one of the greatest places to get away from it all: Lost Valley. You will be a member of the Lost Valley Staff, we’ll bunk you in a cabin, give you a couple of staff t-shirts, and feed you for the week. In turn you’ll help with the campsite inspections, go around helping people with information, and enjoy a week helping others enjoy have fun during their week at Lost Valley.
If you’re interested, please go to the Staff page on the website and fill out a Staff Application, and contact Toni at (714) 546-8558 ext. 136.
