Soccer & Scouting

The Boy Scouts of America launched the Soccer and Scouting program as an outreach to Hispanic youth and families in 2004. Soccer and Scouting teaches soccer skills, providing the excitement of competition, and at the same time learn the life-long values taught in the Scouting program.

The national Soccer and Scouting program is an outgrowth of trial programs initiated right here in Orange County.

Boys 6-10 years of age join Soccer Cub Scout Packs, with parents serving as soccer coaches and parent helpers. Soccer Cub Scouts work on the same requirements and badges as Cub Scouts in traditional Cub Scout Packs.

Parents also get involved in our Soccer and Scouting program, as parent helpers and as soccer coaches.

A year round program, Soccer and Scouting includes sessions of 10-week den and game-day activities, concluding with a tournament and graduation program. Youth join Soccer and Scouting teams to play with their friends, and they learn that Cub Scouting offers additional benefits.

Girls are welcome to join by becoming Learning for Life members rather than Cub Scouts. They will earn different awards, but will still take part in all of the same soccer activities.

Soccer and Scouting has had tremendous growth recently in Hispanic American/Latino communities, especially among first-generation families from Mexico, Central and South America. The vast majority of these families view soccer as their national sport. The Council has worked to blend soccer with traditional Scouting programs in an effort to reach Hispanic youth have been successful in program delivery and retention.
