New Venturing District FAQs
Question- What is Venturing Crew?
“Venturing is a youth development program of the Boy Scouts of America for young men and women who are 13 and have completed the eighth grade, or age 14 through 20 years of age. Venturing’s purpose is to provide positive experiences to help young people mature and to prepare them to become responsible and caring adults. Venturing is based on a unique and dynamic relationship between youth, adult leaders, and organizations in their communities. Local community organizations establish a Venturing crew by matching their people and program resources to the interests of young people in the community. The result is a program of exciting and meaningful activities that helps youth pursue their special interests, grow, develop leadership skills, and become good citizens. Venturing crews can specialize in a variety of avocation or hobby interests.” http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/venturing/about/venturing.aspx
Question- What is the purpose of creating a Venturing District?
To provide those units with a dedicated customer service representative
Increase Venturing knowledge base
Improve the program provided to Venturers
Expansion to high school coed youth
Provide specialized tools/resources for units
Provide leadership development
Question- Who is the key leadership of this new Venturing District?
District Chair- Chuck Williams
District Commissioner- Don Blake
District Executive- Laurel Berkheimer
Question- How will the Venturing District be structured?
Similar to a traditional district. It will have a District Committee, District Commissioners, and Forum (Roundtable). Unlike a traditional district, there will be an additional meeting for the youth leaders and youth unit leaders will be also be encouraged to come to the Forum.
Question- What Venturing Crews does this district encompass?
The district will include ALL Venturing Crews in Orange County excluding LDS Crews and Sea Scout Units.
Question- What will happen with our registration numbers?
The history will go with those units so it will not affect a district’s growth percentage. However, the gross numbers will be lower.
Question- Who will be the contact for Chartered Organizations in reference to their Venturing Crews?
The key contact person for all crews will be the Venturing DE in partnership with the DE in that area. This includes both starting and maintaining a crew.
Question- Who can be a Venturing volunteer?
Anyone! All volunteers who have a heart for Venturing we hope to see involved. Currently, many of the volunteers involved with Venturing are currently either solely involved in Venturing or not a “key” volunteer in their respective districts at the district level. Therefore, there should not be a huge loss of volunteers in the traditional districts.
Question- What about Venturing Crews with the same Committee as their partnered troop? Will they have to communicate with both DEs?
Yes. As we develop the Venturing program we will hopefully see each crew have their own committee or at minimum a division of the committee devoted to the crew.
Question- Will the new Venturing District have a financial obligation?
Yes. Venturing Crews will be expected to raise Family, Community, Leadership FOS money and Fundraising (i.e. Camp Cards) money.
Question- Where will historic donations given through a Venturing Crew be counted?
In the Venturing District, not in the geographic district
Question- How many youth does it take to start a crew?
Minimum 10 youth and 5 adults. 5 youth must be new youth, not multipled in a troop.
Question- Can youth multiple into the crew and troop?
Question- Can Sea Scouts/LDS crews participate in Venturing events?
Yes! All crews will be invited to all events. It is at the discretion of the Chartered Partner and crew their participation level.
Question- What new Chartered Partners are we hoping to expand to work with?
Question- What incentive is there for a DE to help organize a Venturing Crew?
One mission. One Council. One team. We are all working towards the same goal.
