“As a senior at Santa Margarita Catholic High School, Patrick Villasenor applied for a scholarship through the National Catholic Committee on Scouting at the end of February, 2019 called the Emmett J. Doerr Memorial Scholarship.
Because it was a scholarship that all eligible Eagle Scouts nation wide could apply for, he wondered if he had a chance in receiving one of the 7 scholarship awards. The application was lengthy and required that the Eagle Scout had achieved the Ad Altare Dei Catholic Scouting Award. Patrick was fortunate to have had Fr. Mike Hanifin teach his Ad Altare Dei class, who at the time was the chaplain for the National Catholic Committee on Scouting. The Scout had to answer the question as to why they thought he should receive the award and other questions about service to the Scout’s troop, church, School, and community.
It also required a letter of recommendation from each of these 4 areas of service. Patrick had no problem in receiving a response to his request and letter from his Scoutmaster George Romo from Troop 818, chartered by Serra Catholic School. He observed Patrick as Senior Patrol Leader for his Troop overseeing service projects such as Book Drives for the Marines and families at Camp Pendleton. Patrick also was happy that the Pastor from his church, Fr. Duy Le of San Francisco Solano supported him with a letter. Patrick has been an altar server at San Francisco Solano since 5th grade and continued as a senior. His high school counselor Mrs. Alyssa Flynn has known Patrick’s strengths well throughout his high school career as a member of the National Honor Society and a Life Member of California Scholarship Federation. She was also glad to support him with a letter. Lastly, the Wells of Life Organization’s founder Nick Jordan provided a letter of recommendation due to Patrick’s 4 years of service since being the beneficiary of Patrick’s Eagle Scout Project, “Building Awareness of the Water Crisis in Uganda”. Patrick has since funded a water well in Uganda and is a Water Ambassador for this wonderful cause.
The application was submitted and Patrick went on about the business of being a busy senior at Santa Margarita Catholic High School. The letter from the National Catholic Committee on Scouting was received and opened on May 9th. It informed Patrick that he had won the 1st place $5000.00 scholarship from the National Catholic Committee on Scouting’s Emmett J. Doerr Memorial Scholarship! He was thrilled to be the recipient of this reward and states that he is grateful to receive such an honor. The Scholarship is being used toward his tuition at University of Exeter in the United Kingdom where he is studying Politics and International Relations. Patrick looks forward to continuing his service on both the local and international level.”
The Orange County County Council, Boy Scouts of America congratulates Patrick on his achievement.
