Dear Scouting Family,
This week we have taken the very difficult step to restructure our council staff considering the tremendous financial constraints placed upon us by the COVID-19 pandemic. With the shutdown in March, all our revenue generating activities abruptly stopped. While we were able to support a wide range of virtual programs, they could not replace the revenue generated by all the in-person activities at the facilities. On Monday we reduced the staff from sixty employees to thirty-five. The cuts were in positions at the William Lyon Homes Scouting Center, the Newport Sea Base and the Irvine Ranch Outdoor Education Center.
The staff that directly works with our Packs, Troops, Crews, Ships and Posts was reorganized so that each Scouting District now has a single point of contact known as a District Executive. This staff is divided into two teams each led by a field director under the leadership of our Director of Field Service.
Our outdoor adventures staff, delivering programs at each of our camps was reorganized to be able to deliver summer day programs at the Newport Sea Base and Irvine Ranch Outdoor Education Center beginning July with a look forward to what we plan to offer this fall. We are also coordinating the promotion of all the outdoor adventures regardless of facility through a common team. Facility maintenance has also been consolidated to improve our effectiveness at all our properties.
While we have tried to make these cuts in such a way to minimize the impact on our Scouting programs, we know that with fewer people doing the work, we will need to ask many of our Scouting volunteers to step in and step up to help maintain the high level of Scouting programs for which Orange County Council is known.
Please feel free to reach out to me directly or any other member of our team if you have questions, or if you can help. If you can donate time, talent or treasure, the need has never been greater.
